Physical distance. However, if you have two similar runs, you should examine
equivalent lengths and pipe sizes.

Note: I have heard of systems not meeting time requirements with 1" pipes run
to the ITV, but once replaced with 1½" lines "to match similar conditions of
the 1½" branchlines", the time requirements were met. In other words, pipe
sizes do matter when estimating the location of the ITV.

Insofar as I believe this requirement was present prior to the requirement
that all systems are hydraulically calculated, I would say the intent is to
be as physically distant as possible.
But, I am not certain this requirement pre-dated the hydraulic calc
requirement.

Subject: dry inspectors test "distance"

NFPA 13 (2007) section 8.17.4.3.2: "The trip test connection shall be
located on the end of the most distant sprinkler pipe..." How is
"distant" calculated? I assume this means it is independent of
hydraulic remote areas? Does pipe diameter play into this at all? I
am working on an attic system with Tyco Attic BB and AP sprinklers
and the physically distant is very different than the hydraulically
remote area.
