Doug, Always read before you quote. There is a qualifier allowing minor field welding under for certain things and under defined conditions. I looked in 2007 as the most recent code I have handy and it's 6.5.2 and in 1996 because it's currently the one referenced by NICET and in there it's 2-5.2. 1978 is the oldest handy version I have and it requires shop welding and even specifically prohibits torch cutting in the field. (Want to guess when I started doing this?) My guess is that since we get to see so many buildings light up when a new hot roof is being put down it would be bad juju if someone shut down the sprinklers, started cooking on the pipes, and lit up the building. In fact after having my bubble burst by actually reading the code I'm aghast that we allow it at all. Light something up this way and kill a couple of people in the process and we'll be getting another one of those NFPA alerts akin to the anti-feeeze issue. Of course we've been lucky so far and good luck tends to become pop statistical proof as ridiculous as always being able to find the one off exception.
