Not a scientific test, but I was installing a dry chem system in a paint booth. In the dumpster was some used filter media. I was wondering about the flammability, so I got a match, with the thought of touching the match to the used filters. Then I had a better idea, take a piece of the filter and put in on the ground, then put the match to it. Wow! That stuff burns quick! So, I do not think placement of the sprinkler heads above the intake plenum filters would hinder the spray pattern. Having said that, we do not put the dry chem nozzles above the filters, but below.

Subject: Down draft paint booth pits

If the filters are clogged-or-saturated to point of needing changing,
then these filters might retain heat and smoke, so sidewalls could work.

If the filters are new, or can burn through, then heat and smoke might
flow virtually unobstructed to the ceiling, where ceiling sprinkler spray
would flow down through the filters, or what was left of them.
