When we're in a pinch, we will use a one-hydrant test. We'll put a Hose
Monster on the end of a 10 ft. hose attached to the hydrant. Take our static
pressure with the hose disconnected. Then attach the hose, flow it and get our
pitot off the Hose Monster, and the residual from the other ear of the hydrant.
Then we disconnect the hose and take another static reading just to be certain.
This method produces somewhat conservative results, depending on how much flow
you have. The more flow, the more losses are being deducted in the residual
reading due to friction in the hydrant barrel.

Again, not ideal, but we often face non-ideal situations. I'd take these
results over a computer model simulation of the flow.

Subject: RE: Flow Test

I just want to add to Mike's and Lamar's posts (for the Sprink seriously in
need of getting a life)- look at FIGURE A.8.16.2.4 Unacceptable Pressure Gauge
Location. I belive this is similar to a single hydrant flow test. Like Lamar
said, it is slightly less than two hydrant flow. The reason is that more of the
potential goes into kinetic energy, because the velociity where the gage is
NORMAL is higher.

Subject: Flow Test

I swear I once read that a single hydrant flow test was acceptable, maybe in
limited instances, but I can't seem to find anything on it. Any ideas?
