Mr DiBona,
I hate to say yes, but I believe you will need heads above the ceiling. In
essence what you have is an obstruction below the sprinklers at the roof
deck. Because the ceiling is a floating cloud the heat can and most likely
will roll past the edges of the cloud and cause havoc above the ceiling
itself. This will most likely delay the operating of the lower sprinklers.
The problem that I see is that this is not a concealed space since it is
open on the sides.

My two cents worth,

Subject: corridor ceiling

NFPA 2010 is the applicable standard. Drop in ceiling down the corridor on
all four floors of a new construction office building. Non combustible 4'
vertical space above. Ceiling leaves a gap and doesn't connect to the wall
on either side of the corridor. The gap is 1'0 on both sides. Trying to
figure out if sprinklers are required above. I don't see any part of the
standard that clearly addresses this. The closest I can see is the
following:

8.15.1.2.1*<http://codesonline.nfpa.org/a/c.ref/ID00001330400/sec> Concealed
spaces of noncombustible and limited-combustible construction with minimal
combustible loading having no access shall not require sprinkler protection.

8.15.1.2.1.1 The space shall be considered a concealed space even with small
openings such as those used as return air for a plenum.

Do you think that this situation would classify as a concealed space? Do you
think this space requires sprinklers above the ceiling? AHJ statement is to
do it per code. Thanks for any input.
