Appologies to Bobby, since he's getting this twice because I replied to him
instead of the list:

NFPA 33 may throw an additional wrench in this though, it applies to powder
coating and does not make any distinction between overspray from that process
and any other spray coating method. Common sense says powder coat is just
charged plastic dust, but common sense doesn't prevent lawsuits. I think if it
was my neck stuck out I'd replace the heads and cover the new ones per NFPA 33
2011 9.4.7 to 9.4.7.2.

A.5.2.1.1.2(5) mentions sprinklers loaded with DUST. I understand this is a
powder coating operation and not paint. Maybe the Fire Inspector believes
the powder residue is removable in the same manner as the "dust" mentioned
above; of course this is only possible if it didn't adhere. If it can be
cleaned, as described in 25, then ok. If it cannot then I think changing
them is in order and after they are changed overspray protection per NFPA 13
- 2013 6.2.6.4 needs to be applied to the sprinklers and maintained.

Subject: Cleaning Sprinklers

Anyone out there want to address the 'cleaning' of sprinklers as included in

NFPA 25, 2011 Ed.
A.5.2.1.1.2(5) - In lieu of replacing sprinklers that are loaded with dust,
it is permitted to clean sprinklers with compressed air or by a vacuum
provided that the equipment does not touch the sprinkler.

I have a situation where this is being interpreted to mean that sprinklers
covered with residue from a powder coating operation are to be cleaned by
order of the Fire Inspector.

Also, who can we contact with the NFPA 25 that may have already or will
address the intent of the above standard.

Thanks,
