We have a project that requires a Free Standing FDC. Typically we would use
the scenario of putting the backflow preventer above ground and mounting
the FDC on the dishcarge side of the backflow before going back
underground to supply the system in the building. The local fire marshall
is wanting the FDC to come off the interior system and pipe underground
back out to the FDC; he is quoting the explanation after 912.1 of the 2012
IFC: "These connections give the fire department the capability of
supplying the necessary water to the automatic sprinkler system at a
sufficient pressure *without pressurizing the underground supply*."
I believe this is being misinterpreted - my interpretation is that this is
referencing *not pressurizing the underground supply* on the supply side of
the backflow (or a check valve depending on the scenario) - not the
underground to the system on the discharge side of the backflow.

Has anyone dealt with this scenario yet and is their documentation out
there straightening this out?

Thank you,
