I am about to install heat trace in two isolated areas in nursing homes, both on branch lines and monitored. Same response as Bobby Gillett about $: glad I got the total cost right. According to the Raychem distributor the only way to properly provide monitoring is with the controller and they think highly of it. The wiring, sensors, etc. is very similar to kits installed many years ago.

Both are a couple hundred feet from the service entry and if we built a dry riser there, we don't have enough room to slope the long run of main to the protected spaces. The AHJ is one of those state agencies that has <ahem> interpreted the standard liberally, and they don't want any dry system that may be downstream of the riser room no matter how it's configured, so I'm thinking that trace may be an alternative to the auxiliary drainage and maintenance issues associated with dry-pipe in this particular application. I found the Tyco Raychem system was the best for my scenario; a lot of factors go in to it - depends on size of piping and length, how much (if any) insulation will be used, temperatures, and don't forget it has to be listed for FP and supervised per NFPA 13. We had a local Tyco distributor work up the pricing - we gave him our plans and he took it off and priced it. I'm glad he did. I would have missed a lot - this was a big system in a 100'-0+ tower w/standpipes etc.. It ended up needing two panels for supervisory due to the length of the cables, etc. Bobby On Thu, Aug 1, 2013 at 1:53 PM, Steve Leyton <[email protected]>wrote: > Help a warm weather brother out please, with recommendations for heat > trace systems.
