Presumably, but standard practice these days would be to block one or both
sides.

Would this be the same joist that you would attach your hanger rod to?

The main question is will the CPVC manufacturer not void the warranty on the
piping without listed hangers? I have been told by at least one that they would
void the warranty.

9.1.1.6.3: Holes through solid structural members shall be permitted to serve
as hangers for th support of system piping provided such holes are permitted by
applicable building codes and the spacing and support provisions for hangers of
this standard are satisfied.
Challenge: Is a composite wood I-joist
considered a solid member? I
would say not, based on an interp we got years ago that such members were not
heavy enough to meet the intent of the definition of panel construction, i.e.
"members capable of trapping heat".
Notwithstanding my opinion, is the structural engineer of record willing to
sign for the web material as meeting the load-bearing criteria of
NFPA 13? Is the building or fire official willing to hear that
opinion?
Have you contacted the engineering department of the joist manufacturer?

When installing
piping through TJI, are you required to provide a hanger on the piping?
For
years in this area, guys drill the TJI and run CPVC through them without a
hanger. A new inspector is now requiring the fitter to go back and add hangers
on a large 4 story building.
What are your thoughts? I was under the impression that installing in this
manner, you are laying the piping on the structure and the structure is
essentially your hanger, so no additional hangers are needed.
