I believe this is mostly political Tom Foolery and to some degree civil
extortion (effort to overburden with useless costs and taxes) and provides very
little to no actual additional life or property safety. Change the plant from
MJ to Tomatoes and these facilities have existed all over the southwest and
some other parts of the country for years , and I will give you odds not a
single one was ever required to provide such a level of information or
protection. Any takers?
Just sayin’

Subject: RE: Grow Facilities

This industry never ceases to find new ways to keep us challenged. Until this
string came across the forums, I was completely ignorant that these facilities
existed. A quick search on-line (thank you Google) clued me into what an “MJ”
facility was and subsequent articles that I found mentioned that Colorado was
requiring certification letters stamped by a PE evaluating the heat loads,
(lamps) gas hazards (CO2, Butane Etc.) and building mechanical systems
including the sprinkler system design density. I assume this is due to the wide
range of potential hazards from growing, extraction, or sales operations.

Now that I’ve seen this discussion and read some of the material associated
with this issue, it amazes me more people weren’t killed in clandestine illegal
grow and extraction operations. Whether you’re for or against legalization of
“MJ”, at least when it’s legal, the grow operations are much safer places than
the illegal ones.

One odd thing though. This topic really seemed to peak my 20 something design
trainee’s interest. Strange!

Interesting timing. The latest FPC magazine came in the mail today. It has an
article on a grow facility. They used the basis of a tobacco facility to
arrive at OH2. This was for a facility in CO.

It sounds like a reasonable request, but not on your nickel.

The CO2 enrichment may have no impact unless the grow design involves some sort
of CO2 containment tent that interferes with the sprinkler discharge.

The flammable liquids/gases is about the solvents or say, propane, that is used
to extract the THC. That is not a “grow” operation but may likely be a process
they do on site. One might do some checking to see if OH2 is OK but it is
probably not.

Perhaps the "hazardous waste” mention is in regard to someone questioning
whether or not there would be a quantity of THC laden sprinkler water that
needs to be contained instead of allowed to discharge to the environment. Maybe
the leaf removal process that happens in the last grow step to encourage bud
growth generates enough “waste” stored on site to be of concern.

By the way, there is a very good chance the ceiling temperature above the grow
lighting is much hotter than you might expect. Furthermore, if the ventilation
system fails for some reason and the lighting is not automatically turned off,
then all bets are off. You might also take note if the lighting design tries to
congregate the lighting ballasts at some unexpected location that creates an
odd situation.

That note comes from the plan reviewer. My firm was hired to design to OH2.
But it got rejected by the AHJ and had that note on the rejection. My scope
was well defined and this is way out of the scope. So I was just wondering
what others have encountered in these facilities.

Where does that note come from? The AHJ or owner or Engineer of Record?

Either way that info should be provided by the Engineer of Record to the
installing contractor to be included in submittals to the AHJ. I would
certainly hope an Engineer is not dumping this off on the installing contractor.

This is obviously outside of our scope and I am punting this back up the chain.
But, has anyone that is sprinklering these MJ facilties run into this:
"Provide a letter from a state licensed PE or Consulting Firm approved by the
City of XXXXXXX, that supports the fire sprinkler design assumptions. The
letter shall be signed (wet) and address the design assumptions that includes
the use of CO2 enrichment, flammable liquids/gasses, and hazardous waste and
the impact that includes the overall Heat Release Rate (HRR) and the ability of
the fire sprinkler system to suppress a fire. Reference 2016 state fire code
section xxx.x.x"
I used xxx to block out any reference to the particular project.
Any ideas on this stuff. We were hired to just design the system per OH2.
This is going to get interesting.
