This doesn't really answer your question, but how big are these branch lines? I'm surprised to hear that a walkway (for humans, right?) wouldn't be able to support a 2-1/2" branch line.

I have a situation where the owner/engineer required ESFR at the roof deck - way overkill and not needed for 18' of Class I-III storage. Now, they came in and added a bunch of walkways between the racks in an area. So, we now have 42" wide obstructions below the ESFR sprinklers. So, I have to put sprinklers below these walkways. I don't see how I can call them in-rack sprinklers which would allow me K8 or K11.2 as in-racks. That is why I have ESFR below the obstructions. Now, of course the walk ways were not designed to have the large ESFR branch line and main sizes supported below them. So, I am looking at other ways to possible solve this problem created by others.
