As the standard is currently written, there is no relief from the 8’-0 minimum spacing requirement for ESFR sprinklers. The committee did discuss this issue for the 2022 edition and would allow distances less than 8’-0 where the ESFR sprinklers are installed in each channel in obstructed construction. As long as the deflector is above the bottom of the beam, spacing within each channel is still required to be at least 8'-0, but minimum spacing between sprinklers in different channels is permitted to be less than 8'-0.
Technically baffles are still not allowed, but this would provide relief in the future pending acceptance in the second draft.
