Kevin,

Thanks for the response. I should have asked my questions in two parts. First
the 8'-0 minimum which you stated the committee has and is looking at and
secondly is the (12) ESFR fire sprinkler calc area. Does or should the area
square footage come into play in the design? At the 8'-0 minimum the cover
area is 768 sq. ft. minimum. If it is allowed to be spaced at less than the
8'-0 minimum when in channels/pockets that are 4' or 5', then the coverage area
would only be 480 or 600 sq. ft. Does this area start to get to small to
provide the proper floor coverage to suppress the fire?

Thanks,

Subject: Re: ESFR and Obstructed Construction

As the standard is currently written, there is no relief from the 8’-0 minimum
spacing requirement for ESFR sprinklers. The committee did discuss this issue
for the 2022 edition and would allow distances less than 8’-0 where the ESFR
sprinklers are installed in each channel in obstructed construction. As long as
the deflector is above the bottom of the beam, spacing within each channel is
still required to be at least 8'-0, but minimum spacing between sprinklers in
different channels is permitted to be less than 8'-0.

Technically baffles are still not allowed, but this would provide relief in the
future pending acceptance in the second draft.
