Don't forget about backflow prevention requirements. If filling a FW tank from
a potable source, put backflow prevention (1 ft air gap) above the overflow
level as allowed per IPC. Whether the fill line is automatic or manual, that
float- or manual fill valve must be appropriately freeze-protected. Then place
this fill line in an appropriately heated enclosure (likely the heated pump
house adjacent to the tank) and run the pipe up inside the tank, as previously
indicated, with freeze protection on any exposed piping not in a heated
doghouse extension between the enclosure and the storage tank shell.

Really depends on the tank, I have seen ones that fill from the top, some fill
from the side, but I don't think I have seen above ground tanks that fill from
the bottom (but they may very well exist). For the exposed pipe it will most
likely need to be insulated (or heat traced) unless they plan on building a
heated space around the tank. If it is an existing tank, you might be able to
get cut sheets from the manufacturer if you can get a model number somewhere on
the tank. If it is a new tank, then it should be easier to find cut sheets from
whoever ordered it/ is installing it. Most larger tanks I have seen are top fed.

Subject: [Sprinklerforum] Storage Tank

Might be a silly question but when using a storage tank for a pump where is the
tank fill located? Top, Bottom, Side, etc. This is in an area where it does get
cold enough to freeze so I'm wondering if it can be filled from under the tank.
The city supply psi will overcome the head pressure in the tank so technically
it would work.
