A mezzanine or equipment platform as is common in industrial type settings as described is very much an obstruction to the discharge of overhead sprinklers and NFPA 13 is very clear on the type of sprinklers that should be used to protect the area below the obstruction.
If the area beyond the mezzanine requires an ESFR system to provide adequate protection, the obvious assumption is that the space below the mezzanine which is part of the open area would share the same hazard and therefore require the same criteria in order to provide adequate protection. The only way it could be anything less is if the mezzanine had a solid floor and the space below was separated from the adjacent production space by walls where it became a separated room. Simple example of that condition is a modular office out in the middle of the production floor where the office could be LH while the surrounding areas could require a higher degree of protection.
