There are a couple of different approaches to dealing with tire carousels. FM DS 8-34 speaks to this arrangement but it depends on whether the array is open or closed. I had one recently that did not align with the FM Data sheet and based on NFPA 13, 2019, I was able to protect the room using a CMSA design based on Table 22.5. My carousel was an open unit. If the unit is enclosed, it changes the protection approach and internal sprinklers spraying inside the unit will be needed.

The rack structure is on tracks and is about 87 ft wide. The racks move to create a single aisle up to 4 ft wide wherever needed. Similar to medical records storage. Consequently, there is a large concentration of tire racks with no aisle spaces. I couldn’t find anything in NFPA or FMGlobal that addresses this. Has anyone seen this before nad how did they handle it?
