Google gifi gives:

The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency (CCRA) now requires that
corporations file the new General Index of Financial Information (GIFI)
with their income tax returns, starting with taxation years ending in
2000. The GIFI replaces the financial statements that were traditionally
filed with the returns.

Apart from that, we can recycle the GIFI field for non-canadians as a
regrouping tool. 
Example: give all bankaccounts and cash accounts one GIFI code 'Cash &
Banks':
We have a customized report!  He presto ;-)
