I am pretty sure thats just a requirement for TurboGears' identity.   
It was
originally based upon SQLObject, so to write a provider in  
SQLAlchemy, we
have to carry over a few of the same APIs.  You will only need things  
like
this in your TurboGears identity model objects, not in your regular  
model
objects.
