My biggest reason for wanting a mailing list versus a forum is that I subscribe to 20+ mailing lists that all go to my gmail account with gmail rules to organize the content. If these mailing lists all were forums I would not bother with most of them since that would be a lot of work to check their status. With that said I rarely participate on the sqlite mailing list. This is mainly because I have not had many problems with it.
