Of course he was, takes some time to get through the junior staffers to reach the people who know enough about the products to be able to understand subtle interactions like this. His only failing was not escalating quickly enough when he was failing to get a grasp on it. But then, he would probably be criticised for a poor escalation if he couldn't even adequately describe the problem...
