OK, update #2 on this nice Sunday morning: in frustration, I re-installed the Media Server, and boom! It works!
So, I held my breath, and re-installed Kaspersky 2016 - NOT the 2017 version - and Media Server still works. I was sort of tempted to just run Windows Defender, but I'm not comfortable doing that.
