A bit error (e.g. data lost/duplicated/junk inserted somewhere) make
discordant sound where sound is totally unlike the rest of of audio on
either side of "error".  If error is once off - next frame means audio
should return to normal.

If output audio is similar to "correct audio" but distorted in some way
and does not return to normal - except for the fact it happens on lots
of player - I would have assumed it is audio hardware. 

Very strange.

TCP Network connection means data is error free when received by player.
Decoder will also be error free.  This means problem is likely to be in
ALSA or audio driver. There are a few audio hardware chipsets - VT82xx
series is quite common but I think a bit old - I would have expected
other user reports if this was a ALSA/driver error.
