Good that you found a solution. I had been looking at the difference between "default" and "front" configuration and cannot see a reason for the problem. On my system they are in /usr/share/alsa/pcm/front.conf and /usr/share/alsa/pcm/default.conf I don't think there are significant differenes in ALSA capablities between "front" and "default" - it can be easily checked if you can find an application called alsacapabilities (I think) I think the problem may lie in the the fact that "default" will be used by default (!) by all applications for audio output (e.g. Bell,Beep... sound effects). Whereas the "front" device will only be used by your players. The distorted sound reminded me when I had an audio problems which I tracked to another application using the same output device as a squeezelite player - the distortion was different.
