The BBC have not been using mp3 stream but WMA streams for a few years. The BBC offer podcasts in MP3 and these can be streamed when playing on SB.
ASX is a playlist format, mainly used for WMA streams and has been supported by Squeezenetwork and Slimserver/Squeezcenter for a few years as well. The BBC have been using ASX on BBC World Services since it started a few years ago - nothing has changed. However the service is very slow to start and you may be getting a timeout.
