This is not strictly true. Ignoring the third party support for
maildir, UW Imap has it's own .mx format, similar to maildir, which does
allow for folders that contain both mail and other formats. To get
uw-imap to use this you need to put
set new-folder-format mx
into /etc/c-client.cf (for global settings) or ~/.imaprc (for per-user
settings).
The c-client.cf file is very useful, though not officially documented.
For example, if you put
set mail-subdirectory mail
then you can make UW Imap look in ~/mail/ rather than ~/ for mail,
without having to recompile the app.
