Thanx for the input, but actually, I do think I understand exactly how
it's supposed to work. <g>

Yep. If that's how it actually worked, I'd accept that too.

But I'm seeing, far too frequently, mail that was addressed to (using your
examples) [EMAIL PROTECTED] being responded to with a from address of
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mail is very rarely sent by me from the alternate address, and very rarely
addressed to it; I have it purely as an emergency backdoor.

Responses to people who have no knowledge of that address - threads where
the alternate address has never, ever, been brought into being - will
spontaneously come up with that (incorrect) address selected in the from
dropdown.

That's where I'm seeing the issue - it just turns up unannounced!

I'm not disputing that at all.

Yes, and when I see that the wrong from address has been pre-selected, I
do exactly that.

The problem is that I don't always check, and I occasionally miss the
opportunity of fixing it.

But my point is that the pre-selected default address is somehow being
spontaneously overridden, and there's no reason (such as the different
address already being in use) that I can see for this.

It truly seems to me as if there's a buglet somewhere in the way that the
name selection process is invoked.

I am tempted to even say that it's not just with replies that I send, but
that it sometimes occurs when I'm composing a brand new message, but I
can't say this for sure, although I do feel I have seen this happen from
time to time.
