Are you sure it was 1.4.4 you upgraded to? 1.5.0 had a bug where if you were not subscribed to the INBOX, it'd make it so it wasn't selectable. That code hasn't made it into the STABLE branch yet, and the bug was fixed fairly quickly. SM shouldn't just stop showing mail, unless something else has changed as well...
