I must express my amazement at this. How can it be? I'm exactly on the
opposite side of the problem - I've never had an X related ssh problem
and the first time I installed ssh (1.2.14) on HP-sUX 9 three years ago
I was far from being clued in. Yet it worked right away without a hitch.

Make sure your X11 binaries path (where xauth lives) is included in your
path when you configure ssh. Otherwise configure is likely not to be
able to find xauth and you get the following error message:

checking for xauth... no
configure: error: configuring with X but xauth not found - aborting

(The default is to configure --with-x even if DISPLAY is not set. Of
course, the error messages go away if you configure --without-x, but
so do all X forwarding features, so don't...)

You may also get "checking for X... libraries , headers " if X11
libraries and includes live in nonstandard places (that is, not in
/usr/lib/X11 and /usr/include/X11) (such as on Sun).

I only get this on Sun if /usr/openwin/bin is not in the path. If it is
included, configure is smart enough to look in /usr/openwin/lib and
/usr/openwin/include and displays it too.

You may also force the paths to X libraries and headers with the
--x-includes= and --x-libraries= parameters to configure. Usually
this should not be needed, but if you keep getting the "libraries ,
headers " message even though xauth can be found, maybe you should
try this.

Then, when all is compiled and you run the server end, the default path
may not include the X11 binaries directory, which will result in xauth
not being found at login time. If you found xauth at configure time and
it still exists in the same location, this should not happen. If it
does, remedy with the XauthLocation parameter in /etc/sshd_config.

If all STILL fails, run sshd in debug mode and the client in verbose
mode and post the logs to the list for further perusal.
