Please be cautious about the Voodoo 5500. It may or may not work in
the Starmax. The problem is that is requires a seperate power feed in
addition to the PCI bus. This sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.
It did not work in my machine, even after replacing the power supply
(a suggested work-around for card failure). It has worked for others.
I believe the rest of the Voodoo line works fine. I put in a Voodoo3
3000 and it works great. The performance is roughly equal to the
Voodoo 4 & 5, although it's only 16 bit. I wanted a Voodoo4, but
couldn't locate a reasonably priced board at the time. You should be
able to pick up a cheap Voodoo board.
BTW, game developers are starting to move away from supporting the
Voodoo line...
