> I am not sure what you mean by "Mac Address". A MAC (Media Access Control), or hardware address, is a unique identifier assigned to every Ethernet card and chip in the world. When sending data around a network, IP (Internet Protocol) addresses (e.g. 62.252.86.140) are used by software to identify which machine data is to go to, but within a particular Ethernet network, packets of data are actually addressed to that computer's MAC address, and as the data passes by, it is that address that the machine's card picks up when data arrives for it.
(BTW, that's one of the reasons Mac techies get annoyed when people call Macs, "MACs"; as we'd say, Mac != MAC (Mac is not the same as MAC); PC is an acronym for Personal Computer, Mac is short for Macintosh, and MAC is an acronym for Media Access Control :) > If you mean the ISP address of the machine... See "IP address" above. For anyone who wants some nice reading material, this page: http://www.dansdata.com/network.htm is a comprehensive guide to networking; OK, the software section only seems to cover Windows, but most of it is about hardware. That article is something I really must take the time to read, having never gone beyond lectures at uni and chatting in IRC, its an area of knowledge I'm disappointingly lacking in. (Tho. I have worked with LocalTalk, does that count? ;) - Daniel. -- StarMax is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... / Buy books, CDs, videos, and more from Amazon.com \ / <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/lowendmac> \ Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> StarMax list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/starmax.html> Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/starmax%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Macintosh?
