I've seen StarMaxes go for $100 on eBay or PowerMax. Taking yours to a
shop I would guess would be more.
A battery is cheap and if it's the original its time is up. Then hit the
CUDA switch; here's a picture if you're not sure where it is:

While you're in there maybe you'll see some obvious damage (what's that
smell?). Boards and power supplies can be found fairly cheap but at that
point I would turn over the project to your friend who needs the
experience. Nothing like a good repair job to learn proper shutdown. ;-)
