If the battery was weak leaving it unplugged may have finished it off.

The battery is on the mother board clipped in black plastic housing.
And you can take the battery to radio shack and test it. But if
you're not sure how to take it out of the housing, find any computer
shop that may charge not too much, $10 or so for the labor. They
most likely sell the new battery too. Or go to Radio Shack and ask
for 4.5V Alkaline computer battery.
FWIW, I routinely turn off the switch on the powerstrip/surge suppressor my
Starmax is plugged into because it's the easiset way to turn off the modem,
speakers and monitor at one time. I've had it 4+ years and havent replaced
the battery yet.
