CUDA!!  

that's all it took, just hitting the button, and the starmax starts up
fine.  i was the one with the starmax that wouldn't power up due to
pulling the powerstrip repeatedly with the computer on.  i  didn't even
need to change the battery.   thanks all for the help and info.  saved
a load of my time and money.  this starmax should chug on for years!
