You should change the battery--obviously it needs to be changed if the voltage reads less than 4.0 volts. Pressing the CUDA switch simply reloads the original settings in the PRAM. The battery is there to keep a voltage available ands sustain the settings.
Your SM won't run forever; the battery can only keep a voltage to its shelf life expectations. It isn't recharged by the power supply. Magic doesn't work--knowing what things are for and what they do is a much better answer to expensive guesses.
