Good question. I ran both a while back (starting in Mac OS 8.5.1) and I
don't recall much change. SpeedDoubler seemed to be a wholly placebo
application, but for Windows familiars, its facility to make the menu bar
fully keyboard accessible is handy.

RAMDoubler did actually seem to be slightly faster than Mac OS VM under low
load, but with the heavy loads under which I placed my machine (with only 64
Mb RAM) it wasn't any more efficient at all, maybe worse.

When I installed a new hard disc and started over with Mac OS 9.0.4, I found
the machine to be very unstable. I was never sure just what was wrong (the
OS? SETI? RAMDoubler?) but I reverted to Mac OS VM just to be safe, and have
never used RAMDoubler or SpeedDoubler (I think the latter had its own
problems) again. I've never missed either, as they don't seem to have ever
really been of any use at all.

I have, though, just recently purchased 128 Mb of RAM for the machine, and
that made a real difference to speed with lots of programs open, as I can
now switch between applications with no paging delay. I still have a very
slow graphics chip, so screen redraw is horribly slow, and the only cure
would be to upgrade the chip to a new video card, but for now, I won't
bother.
