Only portability, but even that isn't valid anymore since you can put 
an IDE burner in an external firewire enclosure.

There was a time when IDE/ATA was SCSI's poorer and less reliable 
cousin, but those days are long gone, in the desktop computer world 
anyway. I have a Sony CRX140E IDE burner, and it has never given me 
any trouble at all it the two years I've had it.
