Anyway, for those of you old enough to know about such things, what have you found to be the simplest and least expensive way (probably mutually exclusive concepts) of getting the music from the LP to MP3 format?
Get the best analog signal you can.
Clean the LPs, a wet system with a vacuum is best. Use as good of a playback system as you can find access to, but don't listen to it if you ever want to be happy with the MP3s later on. A good rig can be easily $10k, without the digital side, so good advice here is to find a buddy with the right gear and cut a deal. (hint they are NOT DJs)
Capture the analog signal as best you can.
Most likely you are only going to want to do this ONCE, so I would capture at maybe 24 bit 192 khz and save using a noo loss compression like ape files, burn those to CDR, and make my mp3 from the CDR. A decent soundcard to capture with and the software to mess with noises etc is really the easy part and cheap. Search for "soundcard abx" and you will find a good site that compares all the soundcards.
Really unfortunately I would also do none of this on my old starmax.
Collecting 45's is much simpler, just keep them clean and oiled and get out and shoot them once in awhile.
