I see others have given better detailed advice than I could on this topic,
so I'll just add my 2cents. The CD drives that came orig on the SM were all
SCSI I think. You probably added an IDE CD burner as I did. Use "Apple
System Profiler" and click on "devices and volumes" tab to verify what's
where.
 The orig HD with only 2+ gb isnt really worth keeping on the computer
anyway, but I would save it as a backup in case the new one ever dies
abruptly. If you didnt have the IDE CD drive/(burner?) you could use it as a
slave.
I chickened out and had a tech do mine- wish I had given it a go- good luck.
