This doesn't address your specific problem, but it might be relevant down the road.
If you haven't already, I'd recommend performing a low-level format of the disk and updating the disk drivers before you go any farther. Several years ago I installed a 20GB IDE drive in my 3000/240. I did the basic initialization and installed the system software (I think it was 8.1). It worked fine for a while, but after a couple of months, the Max completely wigged out, crashed and destroyed everything on the disk. The tech I took it to said failing to do the low level format and disk drive update in the beginning may have been the cause. They did that and to this day the drive has worked fine.
