First, I took the IDE cable from the original CD drive and plugged it into the Maxtor. With the Maxtor jumper set for "master", the drive appeared on the desktop and in Drive SetUp. It initialized with no difficulty.
The trouble began when I tried to install OS 9.0, which I'm running on the 2.4g drive. Crash! I tried several times with the same result, but not the same error message. Here's what I was told:
-- "Installer engine address error"
-- "Installer engine bus error"
-- "Bus error exception"
The Maxtor is listed in Drive SetUp as bus 1, while the 2.4 is bus 0 and the Yahama CD is also 0.
All of this no doubt is telling me something, but I'm not savvy enough to understand what I'm being told.
Also, when I tried to boot from the 9.0 CD, the Max went on strike. It wouldn't boot until I removed the CD. I had the same result with Max's original 8.6 CD.
I should be holding down the "c" key on restart, right? So, I didn't have the nerve to disignate the Maxtor as the start up disk. I did, however, copy the entire 2.4 drive onto the Maxtor, system folder included.
With the Maxtor in the Max, but not installed, all's as well as usual.
