Perhaps the checkboxes to select the information to be displayed could 
live under an 'Information' or 'Detail' tab in the Sky and Viewing 
Options window [f4] dialogue box?

I could also imagine the information being displayed in the top left as 
a minimalist window containing just the object proper name or catalog ID 
(the minimum neccessary info). This window would have a transparent 
effect border in keeping with the bottom and side bar but much narrower. 
Either the window or preferably the border would contain a discrete down 
arrow. Clicking the down arrow would expand the information window to 
incude anything else that the user has optionally configured including 
any of the features described by Matthew below.
