Erm John,

It works OK here with an A1200T, standard serial port, 56Solo, STFax 3.8 etc.
Independant mode is OK. 

Have you tried receving a local fax to test yours?

Otherwise it could be the phone line, hacks/patches/etc !!!

Please send more info on exact kit and problem (modem internal software level ?, Amiga 
? etc...)
