I have to answer this over and over again...

The samples were recorded at 22.1Khz, stereo, 8bit, from what I can remember
(and it was some time ago now), which is 'quite acceptable' as a playback
format (although no way near as good as CD audio - but there again you don't
really need that for playback over the phone).

However! When you convert the samples via your modem, the samples convert
down to the frequency of the built in ADPCM. With the Solo this is fairly
high, around 11000Khz, so the quality is pretty good, but with any other
modem it's around 8000Khz, sometimes lower.

Try converting the samples yourself, from 22.1Khz down to 8Khz, mono, 8bit,
via your Amiga/PC and play them back - you'll find they become very
scratchy.

Also note that when you records your own samples, via your modem microphone,
this normally uses the highest ADPCM rate within your modem, generating
slightly higher quality samples.

Chris.
