2.2.16-storm simply says where we were based on. Many patches were applied
to the source tree, and it is equivalent to 2.2.17 plus a bit more. (that
somehow happened to be added to 2.2.18 and higher...) 2.2.16-storm includes
RAID 0.9, USB, LVM, and i810 AGP support from the 2.4.x-test series kernels.

2.4.0-test, you mean. I would not recommend that unless you are a developer,
as that kernel can be full of problems and instability (including things that
would corrupt all your data, from time to time).

USB support for HP scanners should already be there. The 2.2.16-storm kernel
has support for the same subset of USB devices as one of the earlier -test
kernels. All you need to do is make the appropriate devices in /dev, and
it should work.

Not too much. But you take the risk of the 2.4.x-test kernels. The
2.2.16-storm kernel already has the patch that you want to upgrade for,
so I'd suggest staying at 2.2.16-storm.

As that's what kernel-source-2.2.16-storm is right now, I don't see the
need for it.
