Let me see if I have this right. :)
First I should try this:

> cd /etc/gdm/Sessions
> ln Debian kde2
> (adds kde2 as an option in GDM so that you can choose it at login)
 
If that doesn't work, I should try this?
 
> So I commented-out my potato and hail sources, added the woody source
> (ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian woody main), apt-get update, apt-get install
> kdebase (installed all dependencies)

> Logged out, logged back in selecting kde2 in GDM and KDE2 loaded nicely.

I hope I have that right.
What I did was used apt-get update, then apt-get install konqueror 
(which installed all the kde-related dependencies plus those I 
needed for konqueror) and when it was done, it seemed okay 
except for the originally stated problem.  I will try that first 
suggestion, of course, first.  Otherwise I will then reinstall kdebase 
from the woody source only and see how it goes.
