The first solution worked!
Thank you for the help.  It's nice to be able to have it work the way 
it's supposed to.
Of course, other probs pop up like...
my reg. user cannot use konqueror (or galeon or mozilla for that 
matter) for web browsing.  Of course I can use netscape, but what 
permission things are happening when I used apt-get to install 
those others?  I've tried making some changes in permissions but 
none seem to work.  I need to be root to access the web via 
konqueror, mozilla and galeon.  What a bummer!  Any ideas?  Do I 
need to add myself to another group that does have permission?
