Do you login using gdm? (ie: is X already started when you login or do you
have to use startx at the command prompt?)

If you gdm, just choose 'Gnome' from the session menu and log in. The next
time gdm remembers this setting as the "default" and you should be fine.

If you use 'startx' at the command prompt, add "gnome-session" (no quotes)
to your ~/.xsession file (if there isn't one, create it) and then startx
again.

haven't got a clue without more error messages. It works fine for me.

Depends on what you're comfortable with and what your monitor/video card can
handle. I use 1600x1200 in single-head mode (I have a Matrox G400 Max) and
1280x1024 in dual-head mode as my other 17" monitor can't take the higher
resolution.

If you find a high res too small, try using a little larger font size
instead.

HTH.
