There are several approaches you can take. You can try booting the box into
single-user mode. At the lilo prompt type: linux 1

If the admin didn't disable that ability (it can be prevented) then you will
be presented with the root bash prompt. At which point you can type: passwd
and reset the root password yourself.

Now as someone else mentioned, there may be trojans on this system. Make
sure you have a backup of all DATA, don't worry about software as they can
be reinstalled, only the data is important. Then wipe the system and
reinstall either RH or Storm :-)

That's it.

You can try a rescue boot disk like tom's root boot disk (www.toms.net/rb)
and use that to boot the system and grab all your data.
