As others have suggested, I hope that "linux 1" will produce a root prompt
for you.

But, if the ex-administrator disabled this, chances are that he's also
restricted and password-protected LILO so that you'd be prompted for a
pass-phrase when deviating from the default LILO image and options.

If so, then chances are good that the CMOS is also password protected, and
that booting to a floppy or CDROM is disabled, so that the only way to boot
the box is through LILO.

But if that's the case, then chances are that the case is padlocked, so that
you can't get into the case to short the CMOS so as to get into the BIOS or
to swap the drives so as to boot other than using LILO.

[So far, I've accurately described Carl's system. :^) ]

What to do then? Why, check for exploits! If you can log in, there's
always the sendmail race condition exploit. What version of ftp (if any) is
running?

Bottom line? If you're not in Danny's position, secure your box, protect
your network and stay updated on the exploits.

There are several approaches you can take. You can try booting the box into
single-user mode. At the lilo prompt type: linux 1
