I do not wish to get into or to start an argument regarding licensing or
Rights.
In one manner or another you Did pay for the ability to play DVDs in
Windows.
As to DVD in Linux.
There are linux drivers available for a few of the hardware de-coder cards
but as yet no fully functional "legal" software DVD player.

This is one of the few areas that I must currently boot into Windows for.
Since
I already pay for the content with the purchase of a DVD, I would think that
the utility to play said material would be free (as it is in Windows.) If
Linux
is to truly become mainstream I would see this as a key piece of
functionality.
